Until March 26, it will be possible to see, free of charge, at the Sesi Cultural Center in Taguatinga and at Taguaparque, the 5th Edition of the International Theater Festival “Bonecos de Todo Mundo”, which will bring together the presentation of shows, workshops, conversation circles and musical shows.
The edition features attractions from countries such as Argentina, Italy and India, as well as national ones, as is the case of the group Locômbia Teatro de Andanças, from Roraima, which according to Beatriz Brooks, a member of the group, the performance performed is a gestural theater with masks and visual poetry with objects.
Chico Simões, creator of Mamulengo Presepada and one of the creators of the Festival says that “Bonecos de Todo Mundo” values the exchange of cultures. He explains that in all editions, there were groups from different countries and Brazilian states performing on the stages, and this is due to the fact that the country’s capital has a vocation for diversity and universality.
“Brasília is a cosmopolitan city. If on the one hand it has no roots, it has many antennae. We Brazilians are tuned in. The different types of puppet theaters in Brazil, mainly in the northeast, gather in Brasília since its foundation. It is important to say that this city is also a universal heritage for receiving embassies and sheltering many cultures. When we talk about Bonecos de Todo Mundo, it has two meanings: for everyone who wants to go, it’s free, and because Brasília promotes this vocation of holding meetings of cultural diversity”, emphasizes Chico Simões.
The Federal District is the only region, outside the Brazilian Northeast, to integrate the Teatro de Bonecos Popular do Nordeste (TBPN) inscribed by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan) in the Book of Forms of Expression, published in 2015. with the publication “Mamulengos of the Federal District: cultural heritage of Brazil”, published in 2020, there are “13 mamulengo groups acting systematically and exclusively with the mamulengo language and whose players recognize themselves as mamulengo”.
Festival
Public schools in Taguatinga receive workshops between the 13th, 15th, 20th, 21st and 22nd of March. The musical shows take place from the 16th to the 25th of March at Teatro do Sesi Yara Amaral after the presentations of the shows with national and international companies.
Puppet theater exhibitions also take place at Sesi, and as a highlight, there will be a performance by the Indian group “Aakaar Puppet Theater”, who will perform a traditional story from their country on Saturday (18), at 7:30 pm.
“The presence of India is a pleasure in this edition. It comes with its eastern mysteries that enchant us and we have been in contact since the time of the great navigations. Brazilians, although they don’t know it, have many influences from the culture that comes from the East. There are everyday things and even expressions of our language. We are a people formed by cultures from all over the world, that’s why “Dolls from all over the world for all over the world”, comments Chico Simões.
On Sunday (19) the Burkina Faso international show “Kurubì” will be presented at 10:30 am in Taguaparque.
“It’s a traditional show that reflects my culture, albeit made in a way that is more accessible to a non-African audience. It is important to make the show accessible, because true tradition is not static.”, says African puppeteer Ibrahim Drabo, who is looking forward to meeting Brazilian culture.

Chico Simões, one of the creators of the festival, says that Brazil owes a huge debt to the entire African continent. He laments that despite being descendants of several countries there, everything that refers to Africa is ignored, muffled and repressed.
“We have to make an effort to start paying that debt. Through puppet theater, we have sought the presence of groups that currently exist in Africa. We want them to come and dialogue with what we inherited from our ancestors who came here by force, and even, despite that, they also brought wealth to the puppet theater, in addition to several areas of our culture”, explains Chico Simões.
According to Chico Simões, the event’s production encountered bureaucratic difficulties in carrying out this exchange. For this reason, the festival, in addition to being a cultural opportunity for diversity, also becomes a struggle to reduce bureaucracy in cultural relations between countries.
Cultural heritage
“Each person who participates in this festival can choose what stood out the most, particularly what always stands out to me are the moments when we discuss the traditions of each country and the public policies for the realization of these traditions. It is possible to notice that Brazil is well behind the other countries in policies that safeguard cultural heritage, and above all, the intangible and in the care of the masters who produce it. The conversation circles are rich and there is a great exchange of experience, in addition to the beauty and grace of seeing dolls from different parts of the world with some things in common because it is a universal language, despite being from different countries and cultures”, Simões account.
For Walter Cedro, actor and member of the group Mamulengo Sem Fronteiras, which will perform on March 19, at Taguaparque, starting at 10 am, there is still a lot of difficulty in performing the theater, as there is no recognition, respect and little incentive. “We will always be the poor cousin of theater. There is no specific announcement for the category”, he complains.
Shows

To pack the shows there will be shows every day after the presentations. As a highlight of the musical program, there will be a concert by the São Paulo duo Àvuà, formed by Bruna Black and Jota Pê, who will present the work “Percorrer em Nós”, which leads to an organic sound with electronic traits, united with African rhythms. The show takes place on March 23, starting at 9 pm, at Teatro Sesi de Taguatinga.
The program also features concerts on alternate days by artists Lô Borges from Minas Gerais (March 16 at 9 pm), Flaira Ferro from Pernambuco (March 18 at 9 pm) and Alicio Amaral who invites Mundu Rodá and Mestre Sapopemba (July 25) 03, at 21h).
Accessibility
With the objective that everyone access the festival, the production will take the shows to public schools. Simões believes that children and their families do not always have the opportunity to travel to participate in the puppet party. “We will take this festival to public schools so that culture is part of education and so that we recognize ourselves in this diversity and strengthen our cultural identity. Children will learn how a puppet theater can be done and the ways, so that if one day the student wants to pursue research, he already has information.”, he explains.
The central event, which takes place in the cultural complex of Sesi de Taguatinga, will also have easy access. Transportation will be available at alternate times from the subway to the location.
All schedule information can be obtained through the official channel of “Bonecos de Todo do Mundo”.
In addition to transportation, the shows will be presented in pounds and audio description. Only on the 18th and 25th of March, this service will not be available at the Teatro Cultural do Sesi, however, the entire program that will take place at this location will be inclusive of people with disabilities.
Chico Simões points out that the differential of the festival is Brasilia.
“Perhaps it is even difficult to understand this, but it is due to the fact that this place is entirely Brazilian. Every Brazilian is from Brasilia. And that has a special meaning in this political moment that we are living, not only in Brazil. The world is passing by on a razor’s edge. It’s under risk and a close threat that we can’t even imagine the dimension. Affirming this universality and brotherhood among cultural diversity is important, because beyond governments and economic interests, we are human beings with universal rights that need to be respected. Culture is part of that right and unifies differences in cultures, languages and practices”, argues Chico.
