Vernyaev got the opportunity to compete again at the Olympics
The Olympic champion in artistic gymnastics was partially acquitted and the punishment was reduced.
Oleg Vernyaev reduced the disqualification for the use of meldonium. This was announced by the Olympic champion in artistic gymnastics himself.
According to the famous athlete, he can already train and take part in competitions. Thus, the 29-year-old Vernyaev will have a chance to qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris next year.
“I am in the ranks. It was a lengthy process in which I proved that I had no intention to dope. The court reduced the sanction by half. This suggests that the court agreed with my arguments and confirmed that meldonium entered the body through no fault of mine or negligence.
Thank you to my family and friends for their faith and support throughout this time. And hello to everyone who did not want this so much. See you. Faster. Higher. Stronger,” wrote Vernyaev.
Recall that since March 5, 2020, Oleg Vernyaev remained out of competition. At first he was suspended from tournaments, and before the Tokyo Olympics, he received a 4-year ban after meldonium was found in his doping test.
Initially, Vernyaev’s ban was supposed to last until November 2024, and the athlete could not participate in the next Games.
In August 2021, the gymnast filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which eventually accepted his arguments and reduced the disqualification. Now Vernyaev can prepare for the upcoming Olympics in Paris.
Earlier, the coach of the Ukrainian national gymnastics team, Gennady Sartinsky, said that if the suspension was reduced, he would include Vernyaev in the team during preparations for the World Championships, which will be held from October 1 to 8 in Antwerp.
Recall that earlier the Ukrainian gymnast spoke about the possible participation of Russian athletes in the Olympics.
