With the vote of 89 of the 94 state deputies, André do Prado (PL) was elected president of the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo (Alesp) for the next biennium (2023-2025). The parliamentarian faced only one opponent: Carlos Giannazi (PSOL), who had 5 votes, all from his party.
Prado’s PL has 19 state deputies and will be part of the bench of Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), who will have peace of mind to govern at the beginning of the legislature. The opposition will only be composed of PT, PCdoB and PSOL, which together have 24 parliamentarians.

An agreement between PL and PT made the 18 PT state deputies vote for André do Prado. In exchange, the legend got the 1st secretary of the Board of Directors, a coveted position at Alesp, since it is responsible for all the internal administration of the House and can appoint up to 80 positions within the structure of the assembly.
By acclamation, that is, without opposition or opposition, Deputy Teonílio Barba (PT) was appointed first secretary of the Board of Directors. The PSDB, the third largest group of Alesp, with 13 elected parliamentarians, took on the 2nd secretary of the House.

André do Prado made his entire political career in Guararema, in the Metropolitan region of São Paulo, where he was councilor, secretary of Health and mayor. The parliamentarian is in his fourth consecutive term in Alesp, where he was elected for the first time in 2010.
Before the vote, during the inauguration ceremony, Governor Tarcísio spoke at the Alesp plenary. “I’m sure that everyone wants the best for their voters and for the state of São Paulo. You can count on the government, which will always have its doors open. I know that every parliamentarian wants to bring public policy to their voters and we want to be an instrument for that, right or wrong, but with humility, accepting the suggestions.”
