MQ-9 Reaper drone
Steps to remove the software were taken after the drone collided with a Russian Su-27 fighter jet.
The United States has removed confidential software from the downed MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Black Sea. This is reported by CNN, citing several US officials.
It is noted that this was done in order to prevent the Russians from obtaining classified information. Steps to remove the software were taken after the drone collided with a Russian Su-27 fighter jet.
Earlier, John Kirby, coordinator of the US National Security Council for Strategic Communications, confirmed measures to protect the “rights” associated with the drone.
“Without going into too much detail, I can say that we have taken steps to protect our rights in relation to this particular drone. And it is the property of the United States. We clearly do not want anyone to get their hands on it other than us,” he declared.
As US State Department spokesman Ned Price said in an interview with MSNBC on March 15, the United States is exploring the possibility of releasing video footage of the drone incident over the Black Sea.
“We are considering such a decision. But when making such decisions, we always take into account, first of all, the need to protect the sources and methods of collecting information … The video shows that the Russian pilot is approaching and in a completely unprofessional way, as it seems, without any control over the actions taken, practically collides with an American drone,” Price said.
Recall, yesterday, March 14, the US military said that Russian aircraft shot down a US reconnaissance drone over the Black Sea.
