The Central District Military Court found Sergey Karnovsky, a resident of Samara, guilty under articles on incitement to terrorism (Part 2 of Article 205.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and distribution of “fakes” about the Russian army (Part 1 of Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). This was reported on the website of the court.
The reason for the persecution of the man under the article about military “fakes” was some publications on VKontakte. What caused the persecution under the article on incitement to terrorism, the court does not indicate.
Under the article on calls for terrorism, Karnovsky was fined 300,000 rubles, and under the article on “fakes” about the Russian army – 700,000 rubles. Following the norm on punishments for crimes committed in aggregate, the court imposed a fine of 800,000 rubles on Samarans.
Since March 2022, in Russia, according to the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, 187 criminal cases have been opened about “fakes” against the Russian army (Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). According to Pavel Chikov, the head of the human rights group “Agora”, 149 people are involved in these cases, and cases have been initiated against some of the defendants in several episodes.
The human rights activist stressed that the largest number of criminal cases on military “fakes” were opened in Moscow (42), St. Petersburg (10) and the Omsk region (9).
