Ukraine took out more than 24 million agricultural products by sea after the start of the grain deal
Russia’s attempts to reduce the terms of the extension of the deal is a manipulation for the sake of further blackmail and escalation of the global food crisis, the prime minister said.
Ukraine insists on an indefinite grain agreement and its automatic extension for 120 days. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said this at a government meeting on Friday, March 17.
He noted that Ukraine, together with its allies, is making efforts to extend the grain deal and has exported more than 24 million tons of agricultural products since the beginning of the initiative. But with the unblocking of sea routes, our country can export twice as much.
“Ukraine is one of the key links in world food security. Therefore, we insist that the grain agreement be open-ended and automatically extended for 120 days,” the prime minister said.
According to him, Turkey and the UN adhere to the same position.
“Attempts by the aggressor to shorten the extension period are manipulation for the sake of further blackmail and escalating the global food crisis. We must prevent this,” Shmyhal concluded.
Recall that on March 14, Russia announced that the grain deal was allegedly extended for 60 days and on the same terms, calling it “an exclamation of good will.” On the same day, Turkey announced that negotiations on a grain agreement were ongoing.
The UN also called for an extension of the agreement on the export of grain from the Black Sea ports of Ukraine for 120 days.
As you know, the grain deal expires this week – March 18.
