The European Union is considering the possibility of external procurement of ammunition for the Armed Forces of Ukraine
Some members initiate the purchase of ammunition for Kyiv outside the EU, in case it will not be possible to produce them quickly and in large quantities on the territory of the community.
The European Union is considering the possibility of purchasing ammunition for Ukraine in the United States and South Korea. About this on Friday, March 17, writes the publication Euractiv.
According to the newspaper, in Europe they are not sure that they will be able to quickly increase the production of ammunition for Ukraine.
At present, 15 enterprises in 11 EU countries have been identified that can manufacture 155 mm caliber artillery shells and five manufacturers of 152 mm Soviet-type shells. Also, work continues with the search for new companies that can take on such an order.
“If they cannot do it quickly and in large volumes, we need to get permission to apply to third countries,” a source in EU diplomatic circles said.
It is noted that the EU defense ministers have reached an agreement that 2 billion euros from the European Peace Fund (EPF) will be used to supply Ukraine with ammunition from the existing arsenals of the EU countries, as well as to increase the production of 155-mm ammunition. However, according to three sources in the EU diplomatic circles, discussions about the use of this money are still ongoing.
It also remains an open question which country should take responsibility for the external procurement of ammunition from abroad.
Earlier it was reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine received high-precision bombs from the United States, which have an increased range compared to gravity-drop bombs.
