Later, Moldova “will join other packages of sanctions,” the Foreign Ministry announced
We are talking about a ban on entry, freezing of bank accounts and assets of individuals who are involved in the aggression against Ukraine.
Moldova is preparing personal sanctions against a number of people in connection with Russia’s war against Ukraine. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova, Nicu Popescu, in an interview with the Moldovan service of Radio Liberty.
He noted that Moldova began to gradually join the European sanctions against the Russian Federation and in a few weeks will announce sanctions against a number of people.
“We are talking mainly about the entry ban, freezing of bank accounts and assets of individuals who are somehow involved in the aggression against Ukraine,” Popescu said.
According to him, the corresponding decision has already been made, but work continues on legal details.
At the same time, Popescu did not name the persons who could be included in the sanctions list, noting only that we are talking about “about 25 people” and about half of them are citizens of the Russian Federation.
According to him, in early March, the EU called on Chisinau to join the personal sanctions applied by the European Union in connection with Russia’s war against Ukraine and the violation of human rights.
Nicu Popescu added that later Moldova “will join other packages of sanctions.”
The minister also added that Moldova is not yet considering the possibility of joining economic sanctions against Russia, but said that Chisinau has been “de facto” applying financial sanctions since their introduction in 2022.
In early March, Popescu said that Moldova would soon review the list of EU sanctions against Russia, which it could join.
And in November 2022, Chisinau joined the US sanctions against pro-Russian politicians in Moldova.
