In a public hearing at the Chamber of Curitiba, on Friday (17), representatives of samba schools and carnival blocks demanded commitment from councilors with the discussion on funding for Carnival in Curitiba. As a way of forwarding the demand, the proponent of the hearing, councilor Angelo Vanhoni (PT) suggested mobilizing the other councilors for the creation of the Parliamentary Front for Culture and Carnival.
“The schools carry out the resistance struggle, but we really need the support of the public power. The Carnival of Curitiba is far from the financial reality of other capitals”, pointed out Jeferson Pires de Assis, president of the Liga Independente das Escolas de Samba de Curitiba ( Liesc).
In addition to the creation of the parliamentary front, Vanhoni also proposed holding a seminar with guests from other states, between April and May, and spoke of the new discussion for the allocation of Union funds for culture. According to the councilor, Curitiba should receive “a reasonable resource”.
De-bureaucratize public notices
A higher percentage within the municipality’s Budget and the launch of more public notices for promotion were also placed as important points to strengthen Carnival in Curitiba.
Paraná’s Secretary of State for Culture, Luciana Casagrande Ferreira, guaranteed that the portfolio works to reduce bureaucracy in existing public notices, with the aim of contemplating more carnival projects. She cited as an example the 2022 promotion notice, in which five carnival projects were disqualified due to bureaucratic documentation issues.
“The State is very far from all this important and visceral demonstration. We are already going to take action and we are not going to disable it due to documentation. We’ve been working a lot on that, on the issue of training,” he said.
