The war against Ukraine had the opposite effect: instead of reducing the number of those wishing to join NATO, there were more of them, the head of the Alliance noted.
The actions of the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, have led to the fact that the length of NATO’s border with Russia will more than double. This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during a briefing with Finnish and Swedish Defense Ministers Pekka Haavisto and Antii Kaikkonen on Monday, March 20.
He noted that the head of the ruling regime of the Russian Federation invaded Ukraine with the proclaimed goal of reducing the number of NATO in Europe.
“He does exactly the opposite. There will be more NATO in Europe, as evidenced by the fact that both Finland and Sweden have applied and received an invitation to become full members. And when Finland joins, NATO’s border with Russia will more than double, the border between NATO and Russia will increase by 1,300 kilometers,” Stoltenberg stressed.
Recall that Stoltenberg has previously confirmed the prospect of Ukraine in NATO. At the same time, Ukraine’s victory in the war is the only way to integrate the country and fully include it in the Euro-Atlantic community.
In addition, the NATO Secretary General spoke about guarantees for Ukraine. The country must be strengthened and rearmed to such an extent that it will be able to withstand further aggression.
