Data from the Public Security Institute (ISP) for the month of February reveal that there was an increase in deaths due to police intervention in areas of conflict between drug trafficking and militia in Rio de Janeiro. The dispute between armed groups for territorial control has been frequent in the western zone and in part of the northern zone since the beginning of the year.
Deaths by intervention of State agents in the region rose from 32 to 52 in the first two months of the year. This means an increase of 62.5% compared to the same period last year.

Contrary to the conflict areas, this type of death had a reduction of 1% in the accumulated in the state. Violent lethality in the west zone and part of the north increased by 24% in one year. This includes all deaths involving some form of violence. The increase in intentional homicide was 14%.
Throughout the state of Rio, street robbery indicators recorded a 10% drop compared to the first two months of 2022. Cargo and vehicle thefts also fell.
The balance sheet was released on Wednesday (22). The data released by the ISP refer to the records of occurrences in the Civil Police stations in the month of February.
Other highlights
Violent lethality: 768 deaths in the first two months of 2023, 405 in February. In comparison with the first two months of 2022, the crime registered an increase of 6% in the accumulated and 12% in the monthly.
Death by state agent intervention: 198 deaths in the first two months of 2023, 96 in February. These were the lowest values for the accumulated and for the month since 2017. In comparison with the first two months of 2022, the crime registered a reduction of 1% in the accumulated and 5% in the monthly.
Cargo theft: 627 cases in the first two months of 2023, 312 in February. These were the lowest values for the accumulated and for the month since 2013. In the comparison with the first two months of 2022, the crime registered a decrease of 8% in the accumulated and of 2% in the monthly.
Vehicle theft: 3,397 cases in the first two months of 2023, 1,581 in February. These were the lowest values for the accumulated and for the month since 2011. In comparison with 2022, the indicator registered a decrease of 7% in the accumulated and 11% in the monthly.
Street robbery: 8,881 cases in the first two months of 2023, 4,221 in February. These were the lowest values for the accumulated since 2005 and for the month since 2017. In the comparison with the first two months of 2022, the crime registered a decrease of 10% in the accumulated and 12% monthly.
