The Student Guild of the José Mânica State High School, in the municipality of Santa Cruz do Sul (RS), promoted a public class, on the last 17th, as a form of manifestation demanding measures for the structural deficit that extends for at least one decade at the school in the Esmeralda neighborhood. Since the main building was demolished in 2013, students are taught in makeshift structures and the definitive solution has been postponed.
Contacted by Brazil in fact RSthe 6th Education Coordination and the State Department of Education have manifested themselves promising a solution soon.
Since 2013, the year in which the school’s main building was demolished for presenting structural risks, the school community has been demanding the construction of a new structure from the state. The emergency solution offered at the time – installation of modular classrooms in a kind of conteiners coated – and which should have been provisional, is still in use today. A lawsuit has already been filed in court by the Circle of Parents and Teachers demanding a solution from the state government.

Public class and demonstration
The president of the Student Union, Emily Eduarda Trein, spoke with the BdF report explaining that the public class called by the student union was held on behalf of the current students and also taking into account the students from the territory who will still come to use the school services in the future. “We need this building to have a dignified study room, with good learning conditions”, she says.
The student adds that, due to the improvised structures, pedagogical spaces such as the computer room, science room and library are unfeasible. Even the cafeteria ends up operating in inadequate space.
Professor Leonardo de Barros Moisés, who teaches Geography, was one of those invited by the students to talk about the events that led to the demolition of the school’s main building more than a decade ago. “We also addressed the subject of valuing the environment, having a quality infrastructure, as this is important in the educational development of students and the entire school community”, he says.
Moisés also pointed out the importance of training critical citizens and valued the initiative of students in seeking to express themselves. He recalled that even many students who are finishing high school spent their entire school life in that space, deprived of the ideal material conditions for their training and, even though it is no longer possible to benefit from the future construction of the new building, they joined the act public in solidarity with minors.
