With the show “Nem todo Filho Venga”, by Companhia Cria do Beco, from Complexo da Maré, in the North zone of Rio de Janeiro, director Renata Tavares won the Shell Theater Award for best director. It is the first time that a black female director has won in the category. The handover ceremony took place last week.
Multi-artist, Renata Tavares is 44 years old, she is an actress, director, playwright, singer, art educator. Born in Bangu, in the West zone of Rio, she graduated from the Martins Penna theater school and is studying Performing Arts at the Federal University of the State of Rio (Unirio).
In the work directed by Tavares, the story of a boy from the favela of Maré is narrated, who dialogues with the reality of many young black people who manage to enter university.

The production, based on the short story “Father against Mother” by Machado de Assis, was born during the project “Entre Lugares Maré” and was the winner of the 9th Festival de Teatro Universitário (Festu) in 2019. During the pandemic, the play was reformulated with even more current reflections for youth.
In the plot, the character Maicon is approved at the Faculty of Law of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and begins to confront situations of injustice that his group of friends experience. Throughout the school year, he feels firsthand how public policies affect all spheres of life.

Ramires Rodrigues, one of the actors in the play, participated in the second season of the Papo na Laje program. In the episode, aired by TV Comunitária in Rio de Janeiro, artists from theater companies from Maré discussed investments in culture in the favelas and peripheries.
“Not every son revenge” is staged by the actors and actresses of Companhia Cria do Beco: Anderson Oli, Camila Moura, Jefferson Melo, Natália Brambila, Ramires Rodrigues, Yuri Domingues and Zaratustra.
