Volodymyr Zelenskyy is making a working trip to the Sumy region today
The President presented Akhtyrka with an honorary distinction of a hero city and awarded its defenders who distinguished themselves.
President Volodymyr Zelensky is on a working trip to the Sumy region. He arrived in the city of Akhtyrka, where he took part in events on the occasion of the anniversary of his heroic defense against Russian invaders, the press service of the head of state reports on Tuesday, March 28.
“In the Sumy region, in our Akhtyrka, we honor the real Cossack courage and inflexibility of our people, our heroes, all Ukrainians and Ukrainian women. Those who fought here for their city, for their land and thus for our entire state. Those who destroyed Russian columns here and thereby broke the entire hostile plan against Ukraine and the Ukrainian people,” the president said during his speech.
The participants observed a minute of silence in memory of all those who gave their lives for the independence of Ukraine. Military personnel and civilians who died during the defense of Akhtyrka were mentioned by name.
“It is a great honor for me to present today to Akhtyrka the honorary distinction of a hero city, a city-defender, a city-winner,” Zelensky said.
The city mayor Pavel Kuzmenko, the chairman of the VGA and the city commandant received the award from the hands of the president.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy also took part in the ceremony of presenting state awards to participants in the defense of Akhtyrka. Orders For Courage of the III degree and medals for military service to Ukraine from the head of state were received by the military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as employees of the SBU, the National Guard, the National Police and the State Emergency Service.
In addition, the President presented awards to four civilians: the Order of Princess Olga of the 3rd degree and the Order of Courage of the 3rd degree. One of them was awarded posthumously.
Recall, on March 27, Zelensky visited the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Zaporozhye region. The president also inspected damaged houses in Zaporozhye and held talks with the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi.
