Brazil remembers, next Saturday (1st), the 59 years of the Civil-Military Coup of 1964. The theme rekindles the debate about the type of transition that was adopted in the country after the end of the regime and how Brazilian were punished for cases of torture, arrests, disappearances and political deaths throughout the 21 years of dictatorship.
In this case, Argentina is a reference when talking about memory, justice and truth. The correspondent of Brazil in fact in Buenos Aires, Fernanda Paixão participated live in the program Central do Brasil this Wednesday (29) and described the main aspects that place the neighboring country among the best resolved democracies in relation to the dictatorial past.
“Argentina was and is a reference, because it was the only country that managed, in fact, to carry out criminal proceedings to try the repressors, those responsible for the repression. This year celebrates forty years of redemocratization. It is an emblematic year. More than a thousand repressors punished,” he explained.
Unlike Brazil, Argentina decided to bring the military responsible for the dictatorship to justice. The film Argentina, 1985 demonstrates the dedication of Argentines to punishing repressors. The work tells the story of prosecutors Júlio Strassera (Ricardo Darín) and Luis Moreno Ocampo (Peter Lanzani) who took the leaders of the last Argentine military dictatorship (1976-1983) to trial, in the so-called Trial to the Boards.
For Paixão, this exemplary performance against the legacies of authoritarian regimes is the result of the struggle of social movements and organizations that have guided the theme, over the last four decades, within the spheres of the Argentine State.
“There is a very strong work, allied to public policies, to find out what happened, who were responsible. Many of these people were not held accountable, but many others were. This is very important in this construction of memory. Thanks to social organizations and organizations. human rights, this was possible. It was because of the struggle of the mothers and grandmothers of Praça de Mayo, who are the women who carried out this search during the years of the dictatorship, including to make visible that people were being disappeared. And this struggle continues to this day.” she recalled.
In this way, Fernanda Paixão also describes that, due to this mobilization in the streets, the theme of the search for memory and truth gained national relevance and is always on the agenda in Argentina.
“Memory is discussed here a lot. Recently, with the release of the film (Argentina, 1985), this subject became well visible, especially with the youth. It is treated here as a living thing, which is always under discussion and dispute. And it also makes a big difference how human rights organizations manage to increase the debate and have achievements, such as state policies, to seek memory, truth and justice, “he explained.
