EU urges Lukashenka to refuse Putin’s deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia would deploy tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus.
The European Union urged Minsk to refuse Moscow to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory. This was announced on Friday, March 31, by EU Permanent Representative to the UN Olaf Skog, Ukrinform writes.
Skog stressed that it is in the power of Belarus to refuse Russia and not allow the territory of a neighboring country to be used as a site for nuclear weapons.
“Therefore, we call on the Belarusian authorities to immediately stop supporting Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine and change their minds about deploying nuclear weapons. Their appearance on the territory of the Republic of Belarus will only exacerbate tension in the region,” Skog said.
He also called on the Russian Federation to return to the implementation of the agreement on measures to further reduce and limit strategic offensive weapons with the United States.
Recall, on March 25, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow had agreed with Minsk on the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus. China reacted negatively to Russia’s plans to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.
The leader of the ruling regime in Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, said that with the growing threats in the country, strategic nuclear weapons could be introduced and the infrastructure for it is already ready.
