The United States has received “clear assurances” from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Kyiv will not use F-16 combat fighter jets donated by the West to infiltrate Russian territory. This was stated by US President Joe Biden at a press conference following the G7 summit in the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
At the same time, in a conversation with reporters, Biden noted that F-16 aircraft can be used “wherever Russian troops are located within Ukraine.” Biden’s statement is quoted, in particular, by the Associated Press.
Earlier, after the meeting between Biden and Zelensky on the sidelines of the summit in Japan on Sunday, the White House released a message that in these negotiations, Biden stressed Washington’s willingness to help Kiev create long-term capabilities to protect and deter Russian aggression. To that end, Biden discussed U.S. support for a joint effort with allies and partners to train Ukrainian pilots to fly fourth-generation fighter jets such as the F-16, the report said.
