The American leader received assurances from the Ukrainian president that the planes would not be used to invade Russian territory.
US President Joe Biden confirmed his agreement to train Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighters during negotiations with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky in Japan. The American leader stated this at a press conference on May 21.
“I told Zelensky that Ukrainian pilots would be trained on fourth-generation aircraft, including the F-16. So that Ukraine could protect itself,” he said.
Biden said he received a “firm assurance” from the Ukrainian president that the F-16s would not be used to invade Russia.
Earlier, the Air Force reported that Ukrainian pilots were tested in the United States, which made it possible to predict the time required to master the F-16 aircraft. The American side came to the conclusion that the Ukrainian military could be retrained in four months.
