Putin last year convinced that Russia and China “agreed on all issues” of the construction of a new highway Power of Siberia-2
Reuters notes that China has actually agreed to the implementation of the Line D project with Turkmenistan instead of the Russian counterpart.
China is leaning towards the decision to build a new gas pipeline from Turkmenistan. This may indicate that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s plan to build an additional Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline to provide additional supplies of raw materials to China has failed. It is reported by Reuters news agency.
Beijing has practically agreed to the implementation of the Line D project, according to which 30 billion cubic meters of gas will be imported from Turkmenistan annually.
The Chinese state-owned oil and gas corporation CNPC has already begun developing a feasibility study for a 200-kilometer interconnector from the border of Xinjiang province with Kyrgyzstan to the Chinese city of Wuji as the first reception point, media reports.
In 2022, with three operating pipelines, China imported 35 billion cubic meters of gas from Turkmenistan, paying $10.3 billion for it, and the cost was 2.5 times lower – about $4 billion.
Vladimir Putin last year convinced that Russia and China seemed to have agreed on all issues related to the construction of the new Power of Siberia-2 highway. Then he claimed that Russia plans to sell to its “strategic partner” up to 50 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
The Power of Siberia is a Russian main gas pipeline for the supply of gas from Yakutia to the Primorsky Territory and the countries of the Asia-Pacific region. This is a joint project of the Russian gas monopolist Gazprom and the Chinese company CNPC.
The gas pipeline was opened on December 2, 2019. The cost of the project was initially estimated at 800 billion rubles, but later it was revised up to 1.1 trillion rubles.
Recall, earlier it was reported that Chinese leader Xi Jinping refrained from increasing purchases of Russian gas.
