Former President of the Republic and former Senator Fernando Collor was convicted of passive corruption and money laundering in an Operation Lava Jato case at the Federal Supreme Court (STF). There is still an appeal, and the sentence time has not been defined.
Last week, the Supreme Court had already formed a majority for Collor’s condemnation, but there were still votes to be counted. The end of the trial took place this Thursday (25), after six sessions.
According to the prosecution of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), as leader of the Brazilian Labor Party (PTB), the former president would have received R$ 20 million in undue advantages after making political appointments to BR Distribuidora, a subsidiary of Petrobras, among 2010 and 2014.
The conviction took place by eight votes in favor against only two against. Ministers have not yet defined the penalty, which should only happen after all phases of appeals have been exhausted. The rapporteur, Minister Edson Fachin, proposed 33 years and 10 months in prison.
The defense of Collor, one of the most enthusiastic supporters of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in his last months of government, claims that the accusations of the PGR are not sustainable because they were based on testimonies of award-winning. Lawyers also claim that evidence is lacking.
