President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) announced on his social networks this Friday (26) that Brazil was chosen by the United Nations (UN) as the host of COP30, the most important climate summit in global diplomacy. Alongside the minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, and the governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho (MDB), the petista promised the “best COP in history”.
Chancellor Mauro Vieira highlighted that this is the “1st time that we will have a meeting of this magnitude on climate change in Brazil”. The meeting is scheduled for November 2025 and will take place in Belém do Pará
As president-elect in November 2022, Lula announced for the first time Brazil’s plan to host a COP. During a speech in Egypt during COP27, the president defended the Brazilian candidacy for the first time. After being sworn in, Lula gathered support and obtained statements favorable to his plan from the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), from China, Portugal, among other countries.
“I’ve already participated in the COP in Egypt, I’ve participated in the COP in Paris, I’ve participated in the COP in Copenhagen and people only talk about the Amazon. So I said: ‘why then don’t we hold the COP in the state of the Amazon to for you to know what the Amazon is'”, says Lula in the video of the ad.
