In the spring of 2022, the IBU announced the decision to allow Belarusian and Russian biathletes to the World Cup only as neutral athletes. As a result, the Russians decided to skip these competitions. In September, the organization extended the suspension of Russia and Belarus.
Earlier, the President of the Russian Biathlon Union (RBU), Viktor Maigurov, said that the International Biathlon Union (IBU) sees no reason to return Russian athletes to international starts, even as neutral athletes.
