A petition in support of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) surpassed, this Monday (14), the 50 thousand adhesions. The text, addressed to the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (Progressistas-AL), and to the party leaders, expresses concern with the directions taken by the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) that “investigates” the movement.
The document states that there is a “clear intention” to criminalize the MST and other popular movements. “There is a clear intention to criminalize the MST, rural movements and also movements fighting for housing in the city. The Brazilian constitution guarantees the legitimate right to organize for all categories of workers and to carry out different forms of mobilization in the fight for their historical rights.”

“The agrarian reality, the structure of unjust property, will certainly not be the object of research and analysis by the CPI, by its work plan. And we all know how many crimes are committed in rural areas, by the wealthy classes and the forms of exploitation of nature, that affect all of Brazilian society”, complements the document.
The text asks parliamentarians, in particular Arthur Lira, to “watch over republican and democratic principles, to prevent violations and the use of rhetoric to propagate lies, hatred, violence and discrimination and useless persecution, which in no way contribute to the solution of the real agrarian problems.”

The text is signed by names such as Luis Fernando Veríssimo, Kenarik Boujikian, Eduardo Moreira and Chico Buarque, among others.
