A state of emergency has been introduced in Buryatia after the destruction of the dam and the erosion of a section of the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM). The Kholodnaya River overflowed its banks and flooded about 200 meters of railway tracks on the stretch between Kholodnaya and Nizhneangarsk stations. Damaged at least 10 poles of the contact network.
Train traffic has been stopped. “BAM will be idle for another week. The damage to the country’s economy from idle cargo will amount to billions of rubles. Plus the cost of restoring the railway,” said the head of Buryatia, Alexei Tsydenov.
According to weather forecasts, in the coming days, the water level in the Kholodnaya River will decline, while the water in the Goudzhekit River is expected to rise.
Freight and passenger trains are sent along a bypass route through the Trans-Siberian Railway.
