:: Afro-Brazilian university is a historical reparation for centuries, say students ::
Since last week, the mandate of state deputy Laura Sito has been mobilizing residents of the neighborhood to participate in the conversation in search of strengthening the partnership and bringing Unilab to Restinga. According to the parliamentarian, the campus in one of the largest peripheral neighborhoods offers excellent higher education and provides access to quality public healthcare for the entire community.
“It is an advance and a way of historically repairing this population that was placed in the extreme south of our capital. Today what we are doing is placing Restinga at the center of the debate”, explains the parliamentarian.
The expected audience for the debate is around 300 people. The event takes place this Monday, at 7pm, at the Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia Parish, in Restinga.
About Unilab
The University of International Integration of Afro-Brazilian Lusofonia (Unilab) is an agency linked to the Ministry of Education, sanctioned by the Lula government in July 2010. Currently, only two places in Brazil have the institution’s campuses: Ceará and Bahia.
According to researchers who are part of the project’s organizing committee, the implementation of a Unilab campus in the southern region of the country represents an important step towards promoting knowledge and training of Public Health professionals with a focus on the needs that directly affect the peripheral population and other sectors treated until now as “minorities”.

Furthermore, the creation of Unilab-Sul should contribute to strengthening the rapprochement between the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, strengthening the relationship between African countries and their descendants from the black diaspora located in the Southern Cone. Initially, the courses that should be Included in the curriculum at the Restinga campus are Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Psychology.
