The Brazilian Independence holiday is marked, once again, by the acts of the Cry of the Excluded and the Excluded. Since early in the morning, protesters have gathered in cities across all regions of the country to propose reflections and actions in search of alternatives to the difficulty in accessing food and water.
The events take place at different times, depending on the location. Click here and check out a list of some of the demonstrations scheduled for this September 7th, with the theme “What are you hungry and thirsty for?”.
O Grito had its first edition in 1995, and emerged from activities of the National Conference of Brazilian Bishops (CNBB). The inspiration was the theme of that year’s Fraternity Campaign: “Fraternity and the Excluded”, and the motto “Was it you, Lord?”.
September 7th was chosen to provide a counterpoint to the Cry of Independence, proclaimed by a representative of the Portuguese royal family. With the acts in the streets and squares, screams that are often silenced are heard, coming from the fields, basements and outskirts of society.
