Argentina forward Lionel Messi spoke about the national team’s first victory in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup over Ecuador.
“We know we have tough games ahead of us in qualifying. It was a very tough game. We recently became world champions, but we must continue to fight and prepare for the next World Cup. Everyone wants to beat Argentina, and now that we have become champions, even more so,” the press service of the Argentina national team quotes Messi as saying.
The match took place in Buenos Aires at the Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberty stadium and ended with a score of 1:0.
The only goal was scored by striker Lionel Messi.
The 2026 World Championships will be held in the USA, Mexico and Canada. For the first time in history, 48 teams will play in the tournament.
Earlier, Messi was replaced for the first time since 2014 in an official match of the Argentina national team.
