The German national basketball team won the World Cup for the first time in its history.
On Sunday, the Germans won the final against the Serbian team with a score of 83:77. Guard Dennis Schroeder, who plays for the NBA club Los Angeles Lakers, scored 28 points for the winners in this match. As a result, he was recognized as the most valuable player of the entire championship.
Before the start of the tournament, Germany, according to experts, was not among the favorites. Bookmakers accepted bets on her final victory with odds of 15.0. Experts traditionally gave the greatest chances for the championship to the US team. The Serbian team was also among the favorites. However, the Germans defeated both teams (they beat the Americans in the semifinals). As a result, the USA was left without any medals, losing to the Canadians in the bronze medal match. The Latvian team took fifth place, and the Lithuanian team took sixth place.
The FIBA Basketball World Cup, held every four years, was hosted by three countries in 2023 – Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines. 32 teams participated in the tournament. The Russian team was not allowed to compete due to the full-scale invasion of Russian troops into the territory of Ukraine.
