Brazilian President Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva said that Vladimir Putin will not be arrested at the G20 summit in 2024 if he decides to personally attend it. He confirmed that he was inviting the Russian president to the next G20 meeting in Rio de Janeiro and guaranteeing his safety.
This year, Putin did not attend the G20 summit in Delhi. Russia is represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Also, Putin did not attend the BRICS summit in Johannesburg: he participated in the meetings via video link.
On Saturday, the G20 nations agreed on a declaration that did not directly condemn Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine. The document only says that all states must act in accordance with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, refrain from threats and follow the principle of territorial integrity and political independence of any state.
Brazil is a signatory to the Rome Statute, which is the foundation of the International Criminal Court. The International Criminal Court in The Hague in March issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin and Russian children’s rights ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova. The ICC suspects them of forcibly deporting Ukrainian children to Russia.
