One of the most important Brazilian contemporary art galleries, A Gentil Carioca, is completing 20 years of activity and last week opened the major collective exhibition “Forrobodó”, which celebrates the political, poetic, aesthetic and erotic potential of the streets.
The exhibition will occupy two mansions from the 1920s in Sahara, in the center of Rio, where the gallery’s Rio headquarters are located, with works by around 60 artists, such as Adriana Varejão, Anna Bella Geiger, Antonio Dias, Antonio Manuel, Cildo Meireles, Hélio Oiticica, Lenora de Barros, Denilson Baniwa, among others, who, in different ways, have a relationship with the gallery.

A pioneer in several aspects, A Gentil Carioca has made history over the years, being the only Brazilian gallery founded by visual artists – Márcio Botner, Ernesto Neto and Laura Lima. Furthermore, the gallery, which today also has Elsa Ravazzolo Botner as a partner, is located outside the traditional gallery circuit, in the Sahara, the city’s largest popular shopping center.
“Gentil was created to capture and disseminate the diversity of art in Brazil and the world. Its main objective is to become a place to think, produce, experiment and celebrate art. Our addresses are places of concentration and dissemination of the voice of different artists and ideas”, say partners Márcio Botner, Ernesto Neto, Laura Lima and Elsa Ravazzolo Botner.
Curated by Ulisses Carrilho, the “Forrobodó” exhibition presents works in different techniques, such as painting, photography, sculpture, installation, video and video installation, by around 60 artists, from different generations, including iconic and unprecedented works, produced since 1967 – such as the “B47 Bólide Caixa 22”, by Hélio Oiticica – to the present day.
“We will cross-reference works by different artists, based on consonances and echoes, seeking a presentation in a way that occupies the gallery spaces in different rhythms, densities, atmospheres, colors and strategies – like different dramaturgies of the same work”, says the curator.
The name “Forrobodó” comes from the costume operetta composed by Chiquinha Gonzaga. “The great inspiration for the exhibition was the personality of the gallery, which has a certain institutionality, with public projects, combined with experimentation, with vernissages that are not obvious for a contemporary art circuit”, says Ulisses Carrilho.
Occupying all spaces in the gallery, the works will be grouped by ideas, without dividing groups. In the first building, there will be a room that points to popular commerce, to the aesthetics of the streets, in reference to the place where the gallery is located. In this same building, in the pool area, “there will be an allusion to the seas, which take us to the markets, a place of transit and exchange”, explains the curator.
In the second building, the curator’s inspiration was the writer Dante Alighieri, suggesting an idea of hell, purgatory and paradise on each of the three floors. In this area are the reddish flag by Antonio Dias and the painting by Antonio Manuel, in addition to the organic forms by Maria Nepomuceno and works by Aleta Valente on the motels on Avenida Brasil.
