President of the Russian Wrestling Federation (FSBR) Mikhail Mamiashvili said that all participants in the 2023 World Championships in Belgrade treat Russian athletes adequately and with respect.
“To resist such dehumanization, we need to close ranks more closely, to be together. Look at this World Cup, all our colleagues are happy that Russia came. Everyone here is friends, communicates with each other, helps, including us. This is how we need to continue,” Match TV quotes Mamiashvili.
The three-time world champion emphasized that the basis of the Olympic movement is not the result, not the fee, not the pedestal, but a handshake, regardless of birth, skin color, or religion.
“It doesn’t matter whether you are a loser or a winner, the paramount thing was the handshake, the brotherly perception of any person,” Mamiashvili added.
The World Championships take place in the capital of Serbia from September 16 to 24. The competition is a qualifier for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The Russians are participating in the tournament in a neutral status.
Earlier, Mamiashvili spoke about the incident with a handshake between Russian Abasgadzhi Magomedov and Ukrainian Valentin Blesetsky at the 2023 World Championships.
