Paid parental leave of 180 days for mothers, fathers and all people in a socio-affective relationship for the necessary care with the arrival of a baby, child or teenager in family groups is the proposal in Bill 1974/21, by the Sâmia deputies Bomfim (PSOL-SP) and Glauber Braga (PSOL-RJ).
Bem Viver, a Brasil de Fato program, features this week’s Interview with the federal deputy to talk more about the bill being processed in the Chamber of Deputies.

Currently, maternity leave provides 120 days for mothers and five days for fathers, a period considered insufficient. Sâmia and Glauber’s proposal also considers the existence of a great diversity of family configurations.
“(The project) deals with various family arrangements. We can talk about a father and a mother, we can talk about a grandmother with a granddaughter, her daughter and the granddaughter who is being born, who have legal responsibility for caring for that child. We can talking about two fathers, two mothers. It’s a guarantee of 180 days with the care that is fundamental”, explains Glauber Braga.

Parental rights provide for 180 for each reference person of the child or adolescent, limited to a maximum of two people. Another planned change is the possibility for pregnant women to start parental leave before giving birth.
“The international examples that guaranteed parental leave provide concrete demonstration that society as a whole only stands to gain”, defended the parliamentarian, saying that the arguments in the text to lower labor productivity are not sustainable.

“Because if you have a family member, be it a father, a mother or another person with a duty of care, in the work activity, but without being able to be happy with that activity, or without being able to cope at all, because your head is turned for care that is not being provided to your child, to your child, there is no work that can be carried out in a calm or serene manner, in a condition that is abusive towards this family and careless towards this child. So it is the contrary to this”, he highlights by highlighting that the level of satisfaction of male and female workers in countries that have adopted parental leave has increased.
