RT columnist Elena Vaitsekhovskaya shared her opinion on the first day of test skates in figure skating.
“The strongest feeling (which you just can’t shake) on the first day of the skates is that no one, except for sports couples, is really ready for the season. Neither dancers nor singles skaters. It is clear that there is still a whole month before the first stage of the Russian Grand Prix, that the season is long and there is no time, but still, it is absolutely no coincidence that the Grand Prix season in the international calendar is preceded by a whole scattering of “basheks”, which serious athletes are already riding absolutely in an adult way.
You watch how at one of these tournaments Ilya Malinin pulls off a short program with more than 100 points, and you understand that this is some completely different level. Not jumping – consciousness. Attitude to yourself, to what and how you do. You can see how the person has improved, although it is also clear that the program, by and large, has not really been worked out. That from this hundred points of his (absolutely deserved, by the way) Ilya will climb even higher as the season progresses.
Well, okay, Malinin is a genius, after all. But there is the same Sakamoto. I’ve never been a fan of hers, but I just take my hat off. Everything is in place – both the elements and the program. In our short program, Ksenia Sinitsyna and Chopin put the entire segment of the women’s singles on their shoulder in terms of staging.
It’s not a matter of when and in what shape you need to be. And in answer to the question: why am I better today than I was last year?
As for the guys, one thing is good: the basic technical level of the current generation of singles skaters looks so smooth and high quality that it should certainly push someone to the top, and not just for one season. Although, perhaps, the critical mass for this has not yet been reached,” Vaitsekhovskaya wrote in her Telegram channel.
