What to do with the military? This is the title of the book that historian Manuel Domingos Neto launched this Monday (25). In the work, he reflects on Brazil’s armed forces model and suggests important changes for national sovereignty. To talk about some of the ideas in the book, the Central do Brasil program spoke to the author.
“The armed forces have a tradition of repressing social reformers and at the same time of profound subordination to the powerful who supply weapons and equipment, both the army, the navy and the air force could not function without foreigners”, analyzed the writer. “This highlights the need for a profound reform in the Armed Forces, this reform must be guided by a new conception of national defense.”
In this sense, Manoel states that we need to produce our own weapons and not rely on production led by the Pentagon. “We need to review these external alliances, we need fewer troops, war today is no longer about hand-to-hand combat. The army is immense, it needs to be reduced and focus not on repressing social movements or reformers, but on preparing to face the external enemy. We need a preponderance of aeronautics, not land forces, we need a requalification of troops based on changes in military recruitment, this military recruitment that still exists today, is completely out of use in most countries and perpetuates a relationship of discrimination.”
