Teachers from 15 different units at the State University of Minas Gerais (UEMG) stopped activities this Tuesday (26) and held a demonstration in front of the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais (ALMG), in Belo Horizonte. Students and members of popular movements also participated in the protest that denounced the Romeu Zema (Novo) government’s disregard for the category and the university.
In total, more than 150 protesters occupied the entrance to ALMG to demand compliance with the strike agreement, signed in 2016, the salary recovery of teachers, in addition to the expansion and strengthening of student assistance.
In a statement, the Association of Professors of the State University of Minas Gerais (Aduemg), which organized the demonstration, explained that the state government refuses to comply with the agreement and is operating an offensive to make UEMG precarious.

“To date, Zema has not presented any salary adjustment proposal, and our salary losses total 66%. The strike agreement approved in court was not complied with by the government, which also did not present any schedule for new appointments”, says the document.
The president of Aduemg, Túlio Lopes, highlights that, in the next period, the category continues to be mobilized to confront the governor’s ultraliberalism and authoritarianism.
“The trade union, popular and youth movements continue to build unity in the fight against the ultra-liberal and authoritarian government of Romeu Zema”, he highlights.
At the same time, the university’s Central Student Directory (DCE), which reinforced the call for protest, the agenda, the reformulation of the State Student Assistance Program (Peaes), with readjustment of scholarships, implementation of university restaurants, improvements in infrastructure of the units, among others.
“The struggle of UEMG students to strengthen student assistance is historic. Today, we affirm that UEMG will only be the size of our dreams with the guarantee that we, students, can remain at the university”, he states. “To achieve this, we need to reformulate Peaes so that the program also subsidizes the construction of university restaurants and student housing”, explains Paula Silva, who is the general coordinator of the DCE at UEMG.
