The Primorsky Regional Court returned the status of “foreign agent” to NEWS.VL journalist Daniil Gubarev. He was the first citizen who was able to achieve inclusion in the Ministry of Justice register as illegal. The decision was made by the Sovetsky District Court, and the Ministry of Justice filed an appeal against it.
Gubarev was added to the register of “foreign agents” on March 10, 2023. The Ministry of Justice justified its decision by the fact that the journalist distributes “destructive materials supporting Western theses about the illegitimate nature of the current government” in Russia, and also lives in “unfriendly” Singapore and publishes materials from other “foreign agents.”
On July 18, the Sovetsky District Court of Vladivostok overturned the decision of the Ministry of Justice. Previously, only the organization Humanitarian Assistance, a charitable foundation that helps people with HIV and drug addiction, could appeal against inclusion in the register of “foreign agents.” This happened in February 2022, but six months later the higher court returned the “foreign agency” status to the fund.
