In the first half of 2023, Russian garrison courts sentenced 2,726 military personnel in criminal cases, which was a record figure since 2012, Vestka found out, based on data from the judicial department of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation.
In recent years, as the publication notes, the number of Russian military personnel convicted by garrison courts in the first six months did not exceed 2,000 people, and in 2020, from January to June, only 1,504 sentences were passed.
The last time such a high rate of military convictions as this year was recorded was in 2012, when in the first six months of the year, garrison courts convicted 2,789 military personnel.
At the same time, as “Layout” notes, the data from the judicial department of the Supreme Court does not indicate under which articles the sentences were passed.
“Mediazona” wrote that the largest number of sentences for Russian military personnel in the first six months of 2023 were handed down by garrison courts in cases of unauthorized abandonment of a unit during the period of mobilization (Article 337 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). As of July, Russian military courts received 2,076 cases under this article, which is twice as many as in the entire 2022, journalists clarified.
Previously, “Verstka” found out that in 2023, at least 147 Russian military personnel were convicted of murders outside combat zones. Conviction data indicates that the Russian military most often killed people while intoxicated. Before the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, there were an order of magnitude fewer such cases: in 2020, 14 military personnel were convicted, in 2021 – 21, and in 2022, 15 criminal cases of murder were brought to court.
