The head of the Organizing Committee of the Friendship Games, Alexey Sorokin, expressed the hope that the project will be held every two years, alternating winter and summer tournaments.
“In 2009, when we presented the project to hold the World Cup in our country, Russia entered terra incognito. Today we are again talking about a new project that has enormous development potential.
The most important thing is that everything that is happening now strengthens our will to organize world-class competitions. That’s why we are launching this global project. The Friendship Games is a multi-sport commercial tournament in two cities known for their inexhaustible sports infrastructure and traditions – Moscow and Yekaterinburg. Discussions about the included sports are still ongoing: today there is a basic set, to which some others will be added. We will not focus on Olympic or non-Olympic sports; we will equally pay attention to both. There are, of course, selection criteria. It is no secret that there are hundreds of sports in the world, so we ask the federations to guarantee the participation of at least 15 countries. This should be a serious sport with a long-established history of international competition.
We focus on elite sports. We have repeatedly emphasized that this is not a festival, but a tournament of the best athletes. We need to support our guys who will not be able to go to the Olympic Games. Therefore, we strive to attract elite athletes from all federations. For this we have an interesting motivational program. First of all, a large prize fund. There is also a discussion about equating prize payments to the traditional Olympic ones, which amount to 4 million for gold. In addition, the winners’ medals will be made of pure gold. There will also be free travel and free accommodation for all foreign guests.
The most important thing is that we are creating a huge legacy. I hope this will mark the beginning of a tradition and the Friendship Games will be held every two years, alternating winter and summer tournaments,” Sorokin said.
Earlier, Pozdnyakov called sport a political tool for uniting countries.
