The mobilization of the National Day of Struggle for Housing, which takes place throughout Brazil with occupations in several cities, took place in the early hours of this Tuesday (24) the occupation of a public Union building in W3 Norte, in Brasília. The place, which according to the occupants was unoccupied, was called Ocupação Leidiane by the National Movement for the Fight for Housing (MNLM).
According to Cristiano Schumacher, from the National Directorate of the MNLM, the mobilization that has been carried out throughout Brazil aims to press for the policy of allocating Union Heritage properties to public housing entities to be put into operation. “Brasília needs to break this prejudice and discuss the possibility of using the city to promote the right to housing”, he highlighted.

The National Movement for the Fight for Housing reported that 80 families are present at Ocupação Leidiane to propose its transformation into popular housing. “This building is completely destroyed, completely dilapidated, but we are here to say that it is possible for workers from the region to live here in the city of Brasília, which is the city of all Brazilians so that everyone can develop” , defended Cristiano Schumacher.
Still according to the MNLM, the people in the occupation were living in precarious conditions, paying rents that make their survival difficult or living in favor. According to the movement, this occupation means the possibility for the city of Brasília to rethink its role and build an urban reform process that preserves its heritage, but that includes its people, who built the city.

Finally, the National Movement for the Fight for Housing said it hopes that the Ministry of Cities and the Union Heritage Secretariat will lead an initiative to allocate these properties for popular housing.
Brasil de Fato DF contacted the press office of the Ministry of Management and Innovation to comment on the occupation, but by the time the article was written the agency had not yet responded.
The National Day of Struggle for Housing also carries out acts of demand in other states, such as what happened this Monday (23) in Rio Grande do Sul. The act took place in Porto Alegre, in front of the headquarters of Caixa Econômica Federal, in the center of the city, with the presence of members of the MNLM and parliamentarians from Rio Grande do Sul.
