State Duma deputy Irina Rodnina expressed condolences over the death of two-time Olympic champion in pairs figure skating Oleg Protopopov.
“I don’t know what exactly happened to Protopopov. I think age has already taken its toll. He was born in 1932. I know that before the Olympics in Sochi he suffered a stroke. Probably all of this had an impact,” Match TV quotes Rodnina.
The three-time Olympic champion said that “it hurts when colleagues leave.”
“Protopopov and Belousova were great athletes with their own faces, with their own “I”, with amazing skating form. They were the ones who changed pair skating, made it more duet and understandable,” added Rodnina.
Protopopov was 91 years old. For more than forty years he lived in Switzerland, where he died. Lyudmila Belousova, the skater’s wife and partner, died in 2017.
Let us recall that the Belousov-Protopopov pair were the first to perform many elements that were later included in the mandatory program of figure skaters all over the world.
It was previously reported that the ROC expressed condolences to Protopopov’s family and friends.
