25-year-old Kemerovo resident Semyon Karmanov, serving time in a colony, was recruited to fight against Ukraine, despite his developmental delay. The man signed a contract with the Ministry of Defense, although he cannot read or write. Karmanov’s family told Mediazona about this.
Karmanov was detained in 2020 in Novosibirsk. According to Mediazona, he found a phone on the street with two bank cards in its case. The young man did not look for the owner of the phone, as he was bursting with calls, and this scared him. After this, Karmanov invited his friends who were begging to go to the store. There he bought candy, paying with one of the cards, and with the help of another he bought food for his friend. Then the company went to a cafe, where Karmanov bought six sandwiches and juice for everyone, and to a pancake kiosk, where he bought pancakes and coffee. He also bought a bouquet for his mother at the flower shop. In total, the man spent a little more than five thousand rubles.
On the same day, Karmanov was detained by police, after which he was sent to a pre-trial detention center. As Mediazona writes, during the investigative actions he could not remember either the location of the events or the characters involved. At the end of 2022, Karmanov was sentenced: he was found guilty of theft and sentenced to two years and a month in a maximum security colony. Taking into account the time in the pre-trial detention center, he was supposed to be released in April 2024, but in October 2023 he signed a contract and went to war.
In early November, Karmanov contacted his family and said that in the colony he was sent for a medical examination, which gave him a fitness category of A – “fit for military service.” At the same time, according to the young man’s sister, he was not registered with the military registration and enlistment office due to disability of the third group.
“He only had to sit for a little while. The first time they asked him, he refused, and two days later they sent him to a commission, they told him to sign – and that’s it. He signed without even seeing or knowing what kind of paper it was. He couldn’t read it, and these cops from the zone took advantage of it! He’s disabled – and to hell with him. But he has relatives, he’s not alone! “, said Karmanov’s mother.
The young man’s family believes that they could have put pressure on him, threatening to increase his sentence.
