The Chernigovsky District Court of the Chernigov Region sentenced Russian serviceman Nikolai Khachaturyan in absentia to 12 years in prison in the case of taking a 15-year-old teenager hostage during the occupation of the Chernigov Region by the Russian Army in the spring of 2022. This was reported in the office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
Khachaturian was found guilty of violating the laws and customs of war (part 2 of article 28, part 1 of article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
According to investigators, on March 19, 2022, Russian soldiers kidnapped a 15-year-old teenager in one of the villages of the Chernigov region. The organizer of the abduction, as specified by the SBU department in the Chernigov region, was the commander of the 21st separate motorized rifle brigade of the 2nd Army of the Central Military District, Nikolai Khachaturyan.
The kidnappers held the teenager for four days to force his mother, a soldier of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, to provide information about the locations of the Ukrainian Armed Forces units. The investigation claims that the Russian military exerted psychological pressure on the woman.
“They systematically called her and sent messages threatening to commit physical violence against her son. In addition, they forced him to record voice messages, which were then sent to his mother. The minor was kept in inadequate sanitary conditions in garages and utility rooms, and was deprived of the opportunity to contact his relatives,” – says a statement from the Chernigov regional prosecutor’s office.
The teenager’s mother turned to the SBU for help. Special service officers carried out an operation, as a result of which they managed to free the teenager and prevent the transfer of secret information about the deployment of units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Chernihiv region to the command of the Russian army, the SBU specified.
Part of the Chernihiv region was occupied by Russian troops in the first days of the full-scale invasion. During the occupation, as Ukrainian law enforcement agencies established, the Russian military committed various crimes: executions of civilians, rape, abductions and torture. Currently, these crimes are being investigated by the SBU and the prosecutor’s office.
