Thirteen popular movements, legal entities, residents’ associations, community associations, parties and the Divina Misericórdia Social Assistance Center in the region, directed by Sister Anete Giordani, are against the permanence of the Essencis landfill, the largest in Curitiba, in region.
The movements consider that the environmental impact on water reservoirs and local inhabitants is serious. The most immediate is the risk of eviction of the 64 families from the Tiradentes II occupation, of the Popular Movement for Housing (MPM), who held a vigil in front of Essencis around 70 days ago.
The document, launched in a march on the streets of the region this Saturday morning, also mentions the possibility of water contamination in the area. “In front of the dump, a few meters away, is Sanepar’s Passaúna Water Treatment Station (ETA), which collects water from the Passaúna dam and distributes it to 551,640 people, according to Sanepar data from 2012/2013, in 24 neighborhoods in Curitiba and Araucária, with capacity to serve up to 800 thousand people”.

In defense of water, against landfill
The Solví Essencis landfill, located in the Industrial City of Curitiba, is a landfill that directly impacts the lives of thousands of families residing in the region.
The landscape of the mountain of garbage, the odor that reaches kilometers away, the vultures and other animals that are attracted by this activity and the risks of contamination of the region’s soil, water, rivers, springs and subsoil, as well as the risk of landslides are some of the most felt impacts.
Furthermore, the landfill contravenes basic standards of the environmental legislation of the State of Paraná, such as Resolution of the State Environmental Council (CEMA) No. 094, of 2014, which establishes that the landfill cannot be located less than 1,500 meters from population centers. , and this rule in the case of the CIC landfill conflicts with the Corbélia Housing Complex built by COHAB in Curitiba.
And there’s more: in front of the landfill, just a few meters away, is Sanepar’s Passaúna Water Treatment Station (ETA), which collects water from the Passaúna dam and distributes it to 551,640 people, according to Sanepar data from 2012 /2013, in 24 neighborhoods in Curitiba and Araucária, with capacity to serve up to 800 thousand people.
This Water Treatment Plant is impacted by inadequate proximity to the landfill, contaminating animals and the risk of accidents that could contaminate the soil and water treatment.
Furthermore, the dump should have already been closed, as its entire surroundings are densely populated, and current capacity is at its limit. The company, however, seeks to expand its activities, which is unacceptable.
Therefore, in defense of our water and our neighborhood, we ask for the dump to be closed!
