Analysts from the digital service provider explained in a conversation with RT why it is dangerous to distribute home Internet to guests. It is noted that when connecting to the main home network, there is a risk of transmitting a virus or malware that has penetrated the guest’s device, for example, after working on unsecured sites.
At the same time, as representatives of the digital service provider Dom.ru reminded, there is a guest network that allows other devices to connect to the Wi-Fi network in a safe mode. To connect it, you need to open the router settings and activate the function, experts explained.
“This means that guests have access to the Internet via a separate Wi-Fi channel and cannot see other devices and data on the main home network, which ensures the protection of personal data and devices of the owners. In addition, owners of some routers can limit speed, control traffic and set access times to the guest network through settings, which minimizes risks and protects data and connection security,” experts explained.
As analysts added, the lack of a guest network function could lead to data leakage and attackers’ access to personal information.
“This is the information that online criminals can obtain: passwords, logins, accounts, banking information, traffic and Internet access, device data,” the company warned.
To make your home network more secure, experts recommend not only setting up a guest network, but also regularly updating the software of the router and gadgets that connect to the network.
Earlier, EdgeCenter Information Technology Director Sergei Lipov spoke in a conversation with RT about the most popular fraudulent schemes in recent months.
