Information from the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass) indicates that, from the second week of this year, the total number of registered infections began to surpass the 34 thousand mark in a row. The result could be higher, as home tests not reported to the health system are not counted and there are people who are not even tested.

The most recent edition of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) InfoGripe Bulletin, with data up to February 3, shows an upward trend in the number of people with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SRAG) associated with the coronavirus in Mato Grosso and Goiás, in the Center -West, and in several states in the North region, such as Amazonas, Tocantins and Pará.
Still according to the survey, there are also signs of growth in Acre and Rondônia, although with less strength. Four capitals follow the trend of increasing syndrome due to Covid-19, Belém, Cuiabá, Manaus and Palmas.
In the city of São Paulo, the numbers also increased. In the first weeks of January, the daily total of new cases exceeded 160 at most. Since January 28, however, records have been above 300 new infections per day, with dates on which they reached more than 450.
Data from the São Paulo city hall were processed by the research team on the Infortracker platform, developed by the University of São Paulo (USP) and the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp). According to mathematician Wallace Casaca, project coordinator, the numbers are still expected to increase.
“We will have more positive diagnoses last week and for the coming weeks. This is a finding, due to the combination of effects of Carnival, end-of-year festivities and, above all, the spread of new sub-variants on national soil, which are more transmissible and with bigger escape.”
The national average of SARS cases remained stable in the last three weeks until February 5th. Even so, the researcher at the Scientific Computing Program (Procc/Fiocruz) and coordinator of InfoGripe, Marcelo Gomes, warns about caution, especially for those who are part of the most vulnerable groups.
“The recommendation, especially for those at risk, elderly people or people with a compromised immune system, is not to participate in Carnival this year, stay at home, enjoy the parades on TV, listen to the radio. risk of ending up exposing yourself and, eventually, developing a serious case. We know that Carnival has a lot of crowds, a lot of people close to each other, that's what's great about Carnival. But, unfortunately, it brings an extremely important risk of exposure, even if it's in open spaces.”
He also highlights the importance of social distancing for those with respiratory symptoms. “There is also an important message for the entire country and all age groups, people who have a respiratory infection, cold or flu symptoms, need to stay at rest and at home, so as not to expose the rest of the population.”
Covid-19 still accounts for more than 90% of deaths linked to respiratory virus infections in Brazil. In 2024 alone, more than 960 people died from the coronavirus. Since the disease began to circulate throughout the country, the country has lost more than 709 thousand people.
