Russia imposed retaliatory sanctions against Great Britain, banning 18 citizens of the country, including representatives of the military-political leadership and scientists, from entering the Russian Federation. This was reported by the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The Russian department noted that the decision to ban British citizens from entering the Russian Federation was made in response to “London’s ongoing confrontational course, within which efforts are being made to demonize our country.”
The Foreign Ministry, in particular, included British Deputy Defense Minister James Cartlidge, Deputy Chief of the Defense Staff of the country's Armed Forces Charles Walker, Commander of the British Submarine Force Simon Asquith, and Head of the British National Cyber Force Timothy Neal-Hopes on the list of persons non grata.
Members of the House of Lords of the British Parliament Daniel Hannan, Michael Ashcroft and Ray Collins were also denied entry.
Representatives of Oxford University Ivor Davis, Timothy Ash, Roy Ellison and Robert Johnson, as well as employees of other scientific institutions in the country, were banned from entering the Russian Federation.
After the start of full-scale Russian aggression in Ukraine, the UK periodically adds to the sanctions lists citizens of the Russian Federation and Russian companies that, according to the British authorities, support the Kremlin’s policies. Currently, there are more than a thousand individuals and one hundred enterprises from Russia on the UK sanctions register. The restrictions also affected Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. It is prohibited to supply jet fuel, luxury goods, goods and technologies related to oil and its refining, and pounds sterling to Russia.
Russia, in turn, is banning British citizens from entering the country. Thus, in 2022, the Russian Foreign Ministry banned 154 members of the House of Lords of the British Parliament, British officials, military personnel, lawyers and media representatives from entering Russia.
